They don't need to fight against the fully trained army. Wizards can 
make themselves unplottable.  They can apparate to the Muggle 
headquarters and after a few carefully applied Iperios make Muggles 
to aim their amazing ships, planes etc at themselves. They can make 
them issue the orders that ensure the sort of "friendly fire" that 
would turn all that technology into a great smoldering pile. Etc, 
etc,
