In the first book, Scabbers AKA Peter Pettigrew AKA Wormtail,
heroically defends Ron and Harry by biting Goyle on the finger. In
light of what we learn about this particular rat in later books this
act of nobility seems somewhat out of character. Why did he do it?
Hans:
In my post, "Character Discussion: Peter Pettigrew" I pointed out that Jo is
personifying the human ego by Scabbers. His job is to defend his owner. When
Ron was under threat he did what the ego is meant to do: defend. When his
job was finished he went back to sleep, which is what the ego does when it's
not needed.
