Why did Hermione lie?

I think the fact that Harry and Ron saved Hermione from the troll 
was what prompted her to lie for them. For me, if someone saved my 
life, I would do all that I could to repay them... and all Hermione 
could do to repay Harry and Ron at that particular moment was to 
blame the whole ordeal on herself, and try to keep Harry and Ron out 
of further trouble.
