The enemy of my enemy is my friend.  Harry is the enemy of Lord
Voldemort and the DE's.  So Harry is the house elf poster boy.

Dobby says that house elves were treated like dirt (not exact quote)
and then admits that he personally is still treated that way, which
implies that his personal situation is not the norm in the WW.

Regardless of whether conditions have improved quantitatively, Dobby
certainly believes they have, and that's enough to have motivated
him.
