Betsy:
Considering that Lupin left his office without taking his necessary 
meds and went to wander the school grounds on a night of a full moon, 
I would agree that *no* Lupin is *not* perfectly aware of his danger.  
(Or he is and doesn't give a damn - either way, the kids get eaten.)
