Kizor:
"What this can't account for is why LV wasn't trying to kill Lily,
who was an active Order member. That may have just been a plot
point. In any case, it's pretty clear what took out the house. The mighty wizard casts a potent spell which goes awry big time, the
end result is a massive burst of unfocused magical power; hence,
boom. The same principle was at work when Pettigrew escaped Sirius."
Hells:
I think it's all to do with Harry (and James before him) being the
heir of Gryffindor. For some unknown reason (previous prophecy?) Voldemort, the last Slytherin wants to get rid of the last
Gryffindors. Lily wasn't related to Gryffindor by blood and therefore didn't need to die.
On the second point, I think it was baby Harry who somehow blew up
the house. In PS Petunia didn't want to leave him alone in the house "And come back and find the house in ruins?". In PoA it says
"It had been a long time since he'd lost control and made something explode. He couldn't afford to let it happen again."
