I remember reading that Snape knew more about the DADA upon entering 
Hogwarts than most Seventh Year students.  He also apparently didn't 
know how to ride a broomstick, having been laughed-at by a girl.  He 
was teased a lot for his 'greasiness'.  To me, he doesn't have a lot 
of social graces, which might indicate the possibility that at one 
time he was taught the DADA out of famililial preservation and in 
that course had no time for much socialising.
