Another really neat theory! I like this a lot.
I have always paired Snape off with Prof Sinistra, of whom we have heard
so little we only figured out in GoF she was a witch!
But that name of hers implies a dark side (yeah, I know it means 'left',
and not 'right'!) and that would suit the way I imagine Snape.....
So the child is an embarassment to Snape instead of the shining example
of Slytherin he hoped for, and has been bundled off to be raised by a
quiet squib family in a remote village. Meanwhile, Snape and Sinistra
have remained married but live distinctly separate lives, having never
recovered from the ego shock of their dissapointing offspring. LOL!
