Frankly, I don't see it. James tuned down Dumbledore's offer and 
told him that he wouldn't have anyone but Sirius for a secret-
keeper. Then he went and took Pettigrew instead. Blessed as was 
Dumbledore with the extraordinary brainpower how could he guess that 
James and Sirius would come up with such a harebrained plan?
