I think you're correct here, but their response would have been to attempt
to barricade the house, rather like Vernon trying to keep the letters to
Harry out (PS).  It would have been totally ineffectual against Dumbledore,
of course, possible very funny to read about, but would have contributed to
the waste of time factor.
