Bart and Rebecca consider Professor Binns's death; I've always thought
that he was probably the kind of raving egomaniac often found in
staffrooms, who genuinely believed that he was irreplaceable and
therefore took steps to ensure that he never had to be replaced.

Or perhaps he just really, really liked the sight of a room full of
snoozing children and couldn't bear to give it up.

Or perhaps he reasoned that the more history a History professor had
experienced, the better.
