Well, with DD's longing for socks, with Harry having freed Dobby via a sock, and with Dobby's having gifted Harry with socks, maybe socks will somehow prove important.  No idea how, of course.

I think this is a wonderful thought and we have direct quotes concerning them in DD's references to socks in PS/SS:

HARRY: What do you see when you look in the mirror [of Erised]?
DUMBLEDORE: I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks.

and

"One can never have enough socks," said Dumbledore. "Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn't get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books."
