It's not a matter of whether he died or not.  It's a matter of 
whether or not he *could* have.  By Hagrid's own admission, 
hippogriffs are very touchy creatures who might kill you if you look 
at them funny. If someone is driving drunk and just doesn't *happen* 
to kill anyone, does that make it okay?  

And Harry and Ron, as has been pointed out by many, nearly WERE 
killed by Hagrid's spiders.  That much cannot be disputed.

That's because Hagrid *is* an oaf. Hagrid is the very definition of 
the word, which means "simple" and "clumsy".  

I don't hate Hagrid.  I like him a lot.  He's a well meaning oaf, 
but he's still an oaf, and he should not be in a position of 
responsibility over kids.  Groundskeeper, fine.  Teacher?  Er, no.

Draco is not always the best judge of character, but even a stopped 
clock is right twice a day.
