Lord Voldemort's Wand/less magic?

So, I know Voldemort has a wand like Harry's the brother wand, but 
when did he acquire the wand? Surely after he learned of the wizarding 
world. So what magic did he use before then? 

I figure from what I read in HBP he knew some basics of legillimency, 
his 'tell the truth!' seemed to point to that. He tortured people... 
Did he do this with magic? He could make people do what he wanted them 
to do, didn't he say that do DD? 

Ok, this is all sounding very bad to start with, so isn't that 
wandless magic (and a lot of it?) used to his own gain? People were 
looking for examples of wandless magic and I don't know if this counts 
or not.
