Geoff:
The problem to me is that however hard you flick a thin, cylindrical 
piece of wood, say 9-12" long, you are not going to produce a really 
noticeable "swish". I can produce a weak sound with a ruler but to 
get a really full-bodied sound, you have to be waving half a plank 
around.....
