I think, perhaps, the difference is that readers are making a moral
judgement on Snape in 
the context of him being an adult. When you take in consideration
everything that Edmund 
did that led his siblings into harms way- I think it's easier for an
audience to forgive him 
of that because he's a child and children make mistakes of morality
more easily than an 
adult simply for the fact that they might not know any better.
