Potioncat:
I think, for what it's worth, that Shingleton was a horrible potion 
maker. He never made it into NEWT level. Bright enough guy, but a bit 
scatterbrained and either could never remember which way to stir the 
potions or forgot about stirring alltogether. He was, of course a class 
mate of Severus's and probably drove him crazy.

So, he grows up, goes out into the world and invents this self stirring 
cauldron to accomodate his own forgetfullness.  Gets rich, gets noticed 
gets put on Chocolate Frog cards.

Snape, no doubt, choked on his morning toast when he read of it in the 
Daily Prophet.
