According to my Britspeak Dictionary, "git" implies a measure of 
incompetence, maybe not quite as incompetent as "ejit", but getting 
there. And whatever you think of Snape's character (and I would be the 
first to admit that it isn't a very pleasant one, also that he is 
hygenically challenged and you probably smell him before you see him), 
Snape is a very bright boy.
