Suppose he knocked him OUT by knocking him DOWN?  Does Hermione ever  say 
that Snape knocked him out with a spell?  I don't recall that she  does.  I can 
easily see Snape, in his rush to get out of the office, simply  shoving the 
little guy aside, perhaps a bit harder than necessary (or than he  intended).  A 
knock on the head and...
