Allie again:
In the sense that it delayed Voldemort's return to terrorism, MAYBE
I'll give Snape that one. But about the actual prophecy, my take on
it is "so what." I think it was much more important for Harry TO
know the prophecy than for Voldemort NOT to know it. Harry now
knows that he is the ONLY ONE who can defeat Voldemort. This
changes everything for him - it's not just about survival anymore,
it's up to him to actively seek and destroy Voldemort. OTOH, I
don't really see how it changed anything for Voldemort. He's BEEN
trying to kill Harry for years already, and there's nothing in the
prophecy that tells him how to actually get it done. I supposed he
doesn't know that, though. Has he given up on the prophecy now,
thinking it's been destroyed?
The whole long, convoluted plot of OoTP seemed to me to be contrived
for the sole purpose of killing off Sirius Black.
