Amiable Dorsai:
It's been my belief that the protection granted Harry must be
reciprocal, that is, that the Dursleys are protected by the same
magic.  I have no canon for this notion, but it would explain why
Petunia never let Vernon chuck Harry out.

Petunia seems to know enough about the Wizarding World to understand
that all of the odd disasters in the news could be the signs of a new
war.  The news that she and her family are about to lose their
protection a year before she expected it would certainly shake her up.
