The Dursleys were terrified of Harry when he came back from Hogwarts, 
they probably didn't want to instigate!  

What I think is *fabulous* about that chapter is how many times Hagrid 
is described as "the giant" and it never, ever entered my mind (nor Ron 
Weasley's, and he knew that giants existed!) that he might LITERALLY BE 
a giant.  Although, I didn't start the series until the first 4 were 
already out, so I had only read the first book once by the time I got 
to GoF.)
