Snape is a spy.  As HPB and CoS show, DE are more than willing to 
take matters into their own hands (or at least the Malfoys are 
willing).  Thus, there doesn't seem to be a good way for LV to keep 
some information from Snape.

Which of course leads me to the great question oft discussed 
here...who aside from Harry, DD, and Regulus (and his partner...) 
knows about the Horcruxs... Many, myself included, think that Snape 
must know (either from his DE activities, or from helping DD after 
the ring was destroyed).
