I agree apparating is not feasible.

Hagrid is animal specialist, so threstals are a big possibility.

My favorite theory is the flying carpets mentioned in GOF. 
- Mr Weasly refuses to re-legalize them, means they exist in the WW. 
- They were legal when Hagrid was younger.
- They would be easier for Hagrid to use than a broom (size wize)
- A rug could be folded ans kept under his coat (especially if his 
pockets are magically enhanced like Ministry cars or Barty's trunk.)

After all, JKR had a plan for those flying carpets, or why introduce 
them?
