colebiancardi here:  I agree with that statement.  Although this is 
not in the books, JKR instructed Alan Rickman to *protect* the trio 
when Lupin turned into a werewolf in PoA.  That speaks volumes about 
his character, I believe.  Snape does try to protect his students 
from any lasting harm - he may be sarcastic and nasty, but he has 
never *physically* harmed his students(unless you call the throwing 
Harry out of his office & the dead cockroach jar indicident 
harming).

colebiancardi: hmmmm.thoughtfully....I actually CAN see Snape saying 
Arrivederci - seems logical to me that Snape could say that - 
smoothly, silkly and very cooly.

Well, Snape may think of himself as *noble*.  I think some of his 
actions point to that as well.
