Voldemort isn't content to simply be protected from death, he
fears death to a degree that he must have THE MOST POWERFUL protection
against death, even if he has to make up that appearance of powerful
protection. So, he chose magically powerful and historically
significant objects to become the Horcruxes because he believe, or at
least hoped, that would increase the power of his protection.

Lliann:
I always thought that the historical significance of the Horcruxes
was an actual level of protection for Voldemort. What wizard would
want to destroy the Slytherin Locket or the Hufflepuff Cup? What
makes these items THE MOST POWERFUL Horcruxes is that an unknowing
wizard would collect, honor and keep these objects safe from harm.
Not destroy them.

Just my two pennies.
