Maybe Peter took it and put it in a safe deposit box at Gringott's before his disappearing act. I can't see Goblin's caring or giving up that info. Seems like a pretty secure institution. They don't seem to check on vaults very often. He certainly had time. Or maybe he hid it elsewhere. Heck he could have buried it. I don't see this as a really big mystery. There had to be a fair amount of time between fleeing the scene and the meeting Sirius. Peter could have done a lot with that wand.
