Snape also doesn't recognize any of the names when the map says Masters,
Mooney Padfoot, Wormtail and Prongs present the Marauders Map.  *Is hoping
this isn't movie contamination and I'm doing this from memory*  You would
have thought if the names were commonly known even if it was only after they
left school, or after their death, that Snape would have recognized it.
