I think Carol's theory offers the best explanations so far. I also 
think there must have been a dark mark hovering over Regulus' body the 
way there was one over Karkaroff's or everybody wouldn't have assumed 
that he was killed on LV's order. That's the DEs' trademark (and the 
absence of it is what DD said tipped him off that the scene he and 
Harry found at Slug's hiding place was faked).
