On the subject of souls... there is another place where souls are  
mentioned in the HP universe... Dementors, who can both feed on you  
long enough to make you 'soul-less'... but also that by doing the  
dementor's kiss, can suck out a person's soul. From here, I'm  
guessing that you can say that a soul is NOT everlasting, and that it  
can be consumed, and also destroyed.
