I didn't get the feeling he was a dolt in the movie either. Hermione  
just says he's not "loquacious". Well, he doesn't speak the language  
well, that's not an off observation. Harry says "He wasn't going to  
the library for books". I didn't get the impression he was an idiot.  
And I don't recall him being brilliant in the book.  *shrug*
