Potioncat:
The Basilisk was in the Chamber all those years. He (she?) was only in 
the pipes when it was sent out to kill, and I would think it could only 
be heard near the area of the pipes it was in. So that DD wouldn't have 
heard it unless he was near that section. 

I'm not sure if DD knew what the monster was, but I don't see how he 
couldn't have. I don't think he had worked out the pipes as a means of 
transportation.
