If I might add to this discussion, I think that it is interesting
that throughout the books, we see more of Snape's skills and talents. I
think that we are meant to understand that he is a powerful and
respected wizard among the DE. He inspires fear and respect in them, and
he is obviously looked to as someone to obey implicitly. Could it be
that Snape, who so desires respect and position and power, to the extent
that he became a DE, has chosen to give it all up to fight for the
Order? This does actually have a feel that JKR might be going for.
Perhaps that is what makes him so bitter. Maybe that is why Dumbledore
trusts him. Snape has all he ever wanted and has found it to be ashes.
Dumbledore knows that there is nothing more to tempt him.
