Either one would have helped him. He did manage to pull one
nonverbal on James (sectumsempra/sectumvisage/not sectum at all). I
don't think he tried to do anything without his wand, even though he
might have been successful. Harry was able to pull off a
wandless "lumos" when cornered by dementors, although his wand was
very close to his hand when it happened and that was life and death.
