I think the locket has already been destroyed.  I cannot get past the
RAB signature in the fake locket DD and Harry found.  I think Sirius'
brother took it and destroyed it--dying in the process. Sirius told
Harry his brother had tried to leave LV's service and was killed, most
likely by deatheaters.  It's just a feeling, back by a few passages in
OfP and HBP.
