Joe:
Irish myth is filled with such unbreakable vows compelling their
recipients to follow them or die. Invariably the person placing the
recipient under such a vow is a person possessing magical powers
whether explicitly stated in the myth or not.

People who engage in this behavior in Irish myths are not
necessarily evil, though.

I don't know if that affects things in the Potterverse, however.
