Hermione comments in HBP (more than once, IIRC) that products from 
the twins' store are the result of some really skillful magic.  I was 
left with the impression that while the twins might be goof-offs, 
they're pretty smart goof-offs (or, as they might have been called in 
an American high school, "gifted underachievers").

They barely scrape a few OWLs apiece and drop out in the 7th year.  
Yet they're actually pretty gifted wizards when it comes to practical 
magic that interests them.  The twins probably think it's hilarious 
to "go out with a bang," so they do.
