bboyminn:

Here is the obvious difference between going to the cave and returning
to Hogwarts. Going to the Cave is an unknown. Dumbledore knows the
cave is protected, but he doesn't know specifically how and where
those protective enchantments are placed, so logically, he arrives at
a distance and proceeds with caution.

Hogwarts/Hogsmead however is very much a known quantity. He can
apparate directly there and know exactly what he will find and where
he will find it.

Just a thought.
