I don't think Fawkes has a connection to his feathers in the way that 
you describe-at least not when they are used in wands.  Then Fawkes 
would have been feeling every single spell ever cast by each wand and 
I think that would be enough to drive anyone, animal or wizard, 
crazy.  I do however think Fawkes has a connection to DD that would 
cause him to feel the AK curse that hit him.  This is one reason I 
think DD's death was planned, maybe not at that particular time, but 
I do think Fawkes was expecting it and had been earlier directed not 
to intervene.
