Actually, I don't think we were ever told, were we, any more than Tolkien ever mentions 
whether Legolas is fair or dark, which doesn't stop fans from arguing over it. At the start 
of the first novel, they have already been attacked and are dead. Presumably, as members 
of the original Order of the Phoenix, they would have been busy defying him in one way or 
another. :-) We just aren't told what that is. Of course, someone may have a better 
memory than I have about this than I have...
