I'd just like to point out something, because it gets glossed over every time this passage is 
quoted.  We're assuming that Snape praised Malfoy *only* out of favoritism.  Might it not 
be possible that Draco's slugs really *were* perfectly cut?

He did get a good O.W.L. grade, after all--probably an O.  And that didn't come from 
favoritism.
