What I got from that is that Snape is far far more powerful than we
knew, only Dumbledore and Voldemort could match him. Harry had little
difficulty dealing with the other Death Eaters that night, but Snape
was another matter.

I agree, and the reason Snape didn't want to kill Harry is that he
knew from the prophesy that Harry was the only one who had a chance of
killing Voldemort and Snape wants Voldemort dead so he can be top dog.
