Well, that might've worked on the first part of the challenge - getting the 
egg - but it would've put him in a less than desirable position for the 
second half of the challenge.  The "not getting turned into a crispy critter 
by Mama dragon once you have that egg" half to be exact.  :-)  The broom 
allowed him to take his prize far enough from the dragon's flame to enjoy 
the victory.
