Well, Bella was able to apparate to the riverbank near Spinners End
without ever having been there before - of course she is following her
sister who has apparated just ahead.  That seems to be evidence that
apparition leaves some sort of trail that another wizard or witch can
follow.

But in the case of a single wizard apparating on his own... it does
seem unlikely that one could just name off an address like using the
Floo network. I wonder if studying pictures or a model of a place
would work? What happens if something has changed since the last time
you were there - e.g. a vehicle being parked in a destination alleyway?
