Just noticed something tonight. Might not mean anything but I found it 
must mean that Karkaroff knew James Potter pretty well. When he first 
spots Harry, I always thought in my reading he recognized him through 
the scar, but I now realize that he recognizes James and confirms 
Harry's identity with the scar:

"Thank you," said Karkaroff carelessly, glancing at him (Harry).

And then Karkaroff froze. He turned his head back to Harry and stared 
at him as though he couldn't believe his eyes.

Karkaroff's eyes moved slowly up Harry's face and fixed upon his scar.

So, it seems to me, he knew James well enough to momentarily mistake 
Harry in the way that one does when they think they recognize someone. 
Does this give us a clue to James profession?
