Or maybe Dumbledore asked the portraits to keep their mouths 
shut. Dumbledore being a Headmaster, the portraits must obey. 
Which could backfire, I suppose, if the portraits aren't bound 
to obey past Headmasters. But if their loyalty to Dumbledore 
outweighs their obligation to McGonagall, or if Dumbledore's 
order/request stands till Dumbledore himself counters it, 
McGonagall wouldn't be able to learn anything from the 
portraits.
