And we shouldn't forget the presumption of innocence too! Take Bess 
of Hardwick, for instance. According to Walpole, 

Four times the nuptial bed she warmed,
And every time so well performed 
That when death spoilt each husband's billing
He left the widow every shilling. 

Of course seven dead husbands look a bit more suspicious than four. 
The last three must have been intrepid to the point of recklessness 
(Gryffindors, perhaps?)
