I've always assumed that it was the ability of magical children to do 
magic before being trained - as in, Harry re-growing his hair, 
shrinking Dudley's old sweater, etc. - that saved Harry: he did it 
himself.  Of course, it's also possible that somebody else who was 
already there had something to do with it!
