It's not. The ring is engraved with the coat of arms of the Peverells, 
an old, rich, and apparently extinct pureblood family, which may or 
may not be descended from Slytherin himself. The Slytherin artifact is 
Merope's locket. I'll let the experts speculate on the symbolism of 
that, though I suspect that the locket was a birthday gift from 
Salazar to his wife, or some such thing.
