  I imagine Lily and James probably did tell them yes, but the reason 
they knew at the time of the fight in the MoM was because all of the 
Order knew about it - they were taking shifts to guard it, which 
resulted in Arthur Weasley getting injured. Dumbledore had his reasons 
for not telling Harry but there was no reason not to tell the rest of 
the Order - hence the arguments between Sirius and Mrs Weasley about 
letting Harry ask questions.
